German text Wer recht in Freuden wandern will, der geht der Sonn entgegen; da ist der Wald so kirchenstill, kein Lüftchen will sich regen; noch sind nicht die Lerchen wach, nur im hohen Gras der Bach singt leise den Morgensegen. Die ganze Welt ist wie ein Buch, darin uns aufgeschrieben in bunten Zeilen manch ein Spruch, wie Gott uns treu geblieben; Wald und Blumen, nah und fern, und der helle Morgenstern sind Zeugen von seinem Lieben. Da zieht die Andacht wie ein Hauch durch alle Sinnen leise; da pocht ans Herz die Liebe auch in ihrer stillen Weise; pocht und pocht, bis sich's erschließt und die Lippe überfließt von jubelndem, lautem Preise. Und plötzlich lässt die Nachtigall im Busch ihr Lied erklingen, in Berg und Tal erwacht der Schall und will sich aufwärts schwingen, und der Morgenröte Schein stimmt in lichter Glut mit ein: lasst uns dem Herrn lobsingen.

English translation 1  What true delight by him is found, Who gives the sun a greeting; When sacred stillness reigns around, No breezes leaflets meeting; When the lark is yet asleep, And the brooks o'ershaded creep, Soft prayers for the morn repeating. 2  The mighty world is like a book, Spread open wide before us, And we may read where'er we look, How God is watching o'er us. Tree and flow'ret, near and far, And the brilliant morning star, Give witness He careth for us. 3  Devotion like the air doth move Through ev'ry thought and feeling; Each heart is gently taught by love Her gates to be unsealing. And when love an entrance makes, Then the lip in praise outbreaks, The joy that she brings revealing. 4  And lo! the waking nightingale, A sudden song outpouring, Calls forth a voice from hill and dale, Which soon is upward soaring; And the cheerful morning-glow Its Creator's praise doth show, Whom be we still adoring.
