General Information

Title: Oh, when I was in love with you
Composer: Jon Corelis
Lyricist: A. E. Housman

Number of voices: 1v   Voicing: Baritone solo

Genre: SecularPartsong

Language: English
Instruments: Piano

Published: 2011

Description: My musical setting for a well known poem from Housman's A Shropshire Lad. The melody is my arrangement of a traditional Scottish tune which has been used for various lyrics; the best known version is probably the song usually called "Cold and Raw."Written for tenor; cello used here to simulate male voice. As the score indicates, I imagine this being sung very freely, but I couldn't get a natural-sounding rubato effect with the synth sound file. Lyrics below.

Oh, when I was in love with you,
Then I was clean and brave,
And miles around the wonder grew
How well did I behave.
And now the fancy passes by,
And nothing will remain,
And miles around they'll say that I
Am quite myself again.
