Description: This is a folk hymn, according to George Pullen Jackson (1953b); Jackson assumed that it derived from a dance tune, but he was unable to discover which one. Words by an unknown author, apparently first published in Rippon's Selection, 1787. The words first published in 77. 77. meter; Ingalls altered these to 88. 88. by adding a syllable to each line. Ingalls used two stanzas in the composition.
