Talk:Jesu, joy of man's desiring, BWV 147.10 (Johann Sebastian Bach)

Merge with Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147?

I feel we should keep editions in languages other than the original on separate pages, for these reasons:

  1. To make categorization to editor, translator, and translation cleaner. Many of these translations have been made by well-known translators. Leaving these on the original page makes the translator page unfair to translators and misleading, not showing the words the translator wrote (e.g., Jesu, joy of…). Translation is not an easy job; I would like to see more credit given. (Surely the Translator-Translation system needs reform!)
  2. To make "Category:Works in <language>" look as it should. It is pretty misleading (and strange) to have Works in English showing Herz und Mund und …; similarly for Works in German. Such inconsistency carries forward into lists such as MultiPubList, where the Language of this work would be shown as German; but concatenation of the Language template makes the lists unmanageable.
  3. To make long pages more manageable. Pages like BWV 147 or BWV 244 get much longer when the other-language works are added.
  4. To make it easier for users, both for adding new works and for searching.

For Bach at least, this has been consistently followed, and in some other cases. Perhaps a more comprehensive use of {{SeeAlso}} (to include other-language works) would be helpful? I would be willing to start doing that. There are hundreds of such cases, and maybe thousands. — Barry Johnston (talk) 14:07, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing the larger issues to bear, but my take on 4) is that one stop shopping is easiest. 3) I don't see a size issue with Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147 (Johann Sebastian Bach), but if split there of course needs to be clear linking between the pages (and won't linking Jesu, joy of man's desiring, BWV 147.6 start looking cluttered?). 2) Least astonishing is a good principle, but Jesu, joy of man's desiring isn't a work in English; it's an edition in English (and is there to be another hierarchy for bilingual editions?) 1) here I don't entirely follow: cpdl doesn't distinguish yet between singing and program translations. Are you proposing to treat the former differently, a la A great and mighty wonder Lo, how a rose e'er blooming Es_ist_ein_Ros_entsprungen#Text_and_translations Es_ist_ein_Ros_entsprungen_(Michael_Praetorius)#English_text?
