Comparison with Template:Ss

Is this template performing the same function as Template:ss, ie. 'surname sorting'? I discovered 'ss' on a publication page and have started using it. Should I prefer one or the other, or is one redundant? - Thanks! GeoffG (talk) 19:46, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

On the surface, the two templates differ in what is displayed; both are for use in tables, and neither affects default sorting in categories (and lists sorted like categories, such as SortWorks). So they function the same, but differ in the editor's taste for what is displayed. Personally I prefer {{Ss}}; we need to break the habit of giving names last-name first, which makes a mess of several important templates. — Barry Johnston (talk) 23:19, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
