Born March 1942, educated Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby and Brasenose College, Oxford (graduated BA 1964, MA 1973); PhD University of Liverpool, 1967. Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in English Literature at Universities of Leeds (1967-70) and Manchester (1970-93). Honorary Research Fellow, University of Manchester, 1993 to date.
Published some 25 + books and editions and numerous articles.
Amateur composer (mainly church music) from age of 14, receiving supervision and advice from the late A.D.Ashcroft, Alexander Knapp, and the late Professors Sir Jack Westrup and Peter Latham. Sing countertenor in choir of St Michael and All Angels, Bramhall, Cheshire, UK; play oboe and recorders. Main non-musical hobby, gardening. Married to Mary; four children, Emily, Grace, Robin and Harriet.
