It used to be that I could open a .pdf and a .mid and play the midi while looking at the score. Now when I open a pdf it replaces the current window so I can't open the midi. Furthermore, when I click on the midi it doesn't play, it downloads. Clicking on an mp3 is also problematical as it replaces the current page. This makes it impossible to look at a score and listen to the mp3. Have these actions changed? Or has my browser (Firefox) changed something without my asking it to? Merge the Gombert to the Hesdin suggested.

Hi John. First of all, many thanks for your wonderful editions that you have been contributing to CPDL – they are invaluable enhancements to our library. The real purpose of this message, though, is that I am suggesting we merge Alleluia: Spiritus Domini (Nicolas Gombert) into Alleluia: Spiritus Domini (Nicolle des Celliers de Hesdin) – following practice that has been used at ChoralWiki in other instances. Please feel free to express your opinion on the matter, either here on the discussion page for the Hesdin (where the merge discussion takes place). Thanks again for your scholarship, musicianship, and generosity in sharing your editions with us! – Chucktalk Giffen 15:10, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Please do whatever CPDL normally does in such a situation. I can't find "the merge discussion" you refer to regarding the Gombert/Hesdin Alleluia, so however you normally handle dueling or changing attribution is OK with me. John Hetland 19:00, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Fatal error

What did I do to deserve this?:
Fatal error: Call to a member function isDisabled() on a non-object in /home/cpdl/public_html/wiki/includes/db/Database.php on line 2654
I was submitting text and translation for Cardoso: Nemo. Possibly I forgot to do the arithmetic or did it wrong?

Hi John, this is a very unexpected error, apparently not related to anything you might be doing during your edit. Please try to add the text again and inform me here if you receive the same error message, ok? Regards, —Carlos Email.gif 03:54, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
I successfully added text and translation now. Maybe I was tired last night and did something crazy. I see I also forgot to sign my comment above. John Hetland 14:21, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Corrupt composer name

Adding Vidi aquam by Filipe de Magalhaes (tilde on third a) I didn't know how to make an a with a tilde on it so I copied and pasted a correct instance of it in CPDL. But somehow I screwed it up and created a page for something like Vidi aquam (Filipe de Magalh!@#$es). I managed to fix everything but I don't think I'm able to delete the spurious page. John Hetland 08:34, 21 February 2011 (CST)

Hi, John. I've seen your words on the line of your creation of the correct page. I deleted the old one some time ago. Thank you for your contributions. Claude 08:57, 21 February 2011 (CST)

Missing composer

Why is Alfonso Ferrabosco I not in the index of composers? I was well on my way to the unfamiliar task of adding him when I (somehow) discovered he existed. But he didn't have any compositions. Now he has one, which I added. John Hetland (talk) 05:18, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Oh, now I see he's in the other list, the composers with no works. But now he has a work, so I suppose either he will move automatically on some update cycle, or someone with more clout than I will move him. John Hetland (talk) 01:26, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Ah! I fixed it! That was easy. Just have to keep reading the fine print. John Hetland (talk) 01:35, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Wrong composer

Arrgh! I submitted Obrecht's Beata es Maria as though it were by Gombert. Fixing my error is proving difficult, maybe impossible. I regret that I've left stranded the Works entry for the nonexistent piece, as well as the orphan files gomb-bea.pdf and gomb-bea.MID. When I tried to resubmit the pdf under its correct name I got an error that it was a duplicate of an existing file, which of course it is. Then I seemed to be frozen out, unable to access CPDL at all for many minutes. Now I'll try again to submit, ignoring warning messages, but I may need supervisory intervention... John Hetland (talk) 21:12, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi John, no problem at all, this can happen to anyone ;) I've deleted the wrongly titled "gomb-bea" files. As we're on this, filenames no longer have restrictions regarding the number of characters, and we even suggest that composer's surname and work titles be not abbreviated; you may upload files named e.g. "Obrecht - Beata es Maria.pdf" if you will. Thank you! —Carlos (talk) 04:23, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for cleaning up my mess. As for filenames, I prefer to stick with the cccc-ttt format so as to be consistent with my previous submissions, which I keep in one folder. John Hetland (talk) 04:42, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

No link to .MID file

OK, I made a LOT of mistakes trying the "automatic" thing, including uploading entirely the wrong file, wrong composer. But now there is a Works entry for Claudio Merulo: Salvator noster. Everything seems OK but what should be a link to Meru-sal.MID doesn't make a link. What's the problem? John Hetland (talk) 03:58, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi John, it was a capitalisation issue. I've fixed it. Regards, Jkelecom (talk) 11:59, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
Ah, who knew filename extensions were case sensitive? Thanks! I've also fixed it on the composer page. John Hetland (talk) 16:01, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

No more file links on composer pages?

I thought this was the place to ask questions, as I've been doing and getting quick answers, but I just saw the instruction that says I shouldn't do that; I should write on a particular administrator's talk page. But how would I know which administrator to ask? And if I can't ask a question here, what is this page for? Well, since my questions here have always been answered quickly, I'll ask it: Is it a new standard that composer pages are to have only titles and you have to click on a title to see the edition(s) before you can look at a PDF or listen to a MIDI? John Hetland (talk) 04:06, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi, John, thank you for your contributions. Many questions get an answer through CPDL forums. Try this thread. Claude (talk) 07:14, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
Hello, John. I suppose that you haven't been able to read the forum thread indicated by Claude, because it's in a hidden section of the forum, visible only by admins. Here's the explanation that I gave via email to another user on this issue:
"Don't worry about the PDF icon not appearing on your composer page. This is the result of a new policy being implemented on CPDL: we want downloaders to visit the works page so that they learn about the copyright status and license type of each particular edition before they download the score. Icons on composer pages will be gradually removed."
Best, —Carlos Email.gif 02:48, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, yes, I gave up on the forum and decided it was probably a new policy, and it makes sense. John Hetland (talk) 04:21, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Epiphaniam Domino canamus

Hello John. Thanks for this new edition! This is just to alert you that the pdf contains a typo in its title ("Epiphanium"). I also could not play the midi; tried with two different players. Could you please check? Thank you. —Carlos Email.gif 17:53, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

PS: Opened the midi with Encore, and it seems to have a very long sequence of rests, with the music starting on page 50 only. —Carlos Email.gif 17:57, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, that's a clue. I haven't figured out why this MIDI, among all the ones I've made and still make, is no good, even when I remake it. I've uploaded an old MIDI; it's mono but it plays. If I solve the problem I'll upload a stereo MIDI file. John Hetland (talk) 19:03, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Josquin

Hi John,

Please have a peek, if you have spare time, at Sortable list of Josquin des Prez compositions. It's organized in the order of Smijers (sigh) which makes it a bit awkward to edit (and it needs more updating), but I tried to gather varied opinions on Echtheit. Richard Mix (talk) 21:36, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

OK, this is interesting. I see both of my most recent contributions have mild reservations noted. John Hetland (talk) 01:25, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
Nothing personal ;-) Richard Mix (talk) 22:42, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
Well, I finally looked up Echtheit. Genuousness, authenticity. Rarely a certainty. John Hetland (talk) 19:47, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Beati omnes qui timent Dominum (i) (Ludwig Senfl)

Always a pleasure to see a new Hetland edition! When I see a page name of the form Incipit II (or in this case (i)) I'm always tempted to tidy up by making sure the other is named Incipit I. But if they were published at different dates or appear in separate sources I prefer something other than arbitrary numbers: Salve Regina (Orlando di Lasso) & Ave Regina caelorum (Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina). Not being up to speed myself on this case I'd rather leave it up to you! Richard Mix (talk) 09:15, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Horwood: Salve Regina

Hi, John, Thank you for your contributions, always of a top interest. Regarding the work above, there is only one step left: just go to William Horwood composer page then click on "Add new work" upper right. Fill the AddWork form and the work page will be duly created. That wasn't possible before, as the composer was notated as "unhosted". Claude (talk) 08:19, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

Page "Composer: John Hetland"

Hello, In case you haven't found it yet, create a new page (search on the new composer name) and add {{subst:new composer}} and save the page. Re-edit. See {{New composer}} for details. Cheers. — Barry Johnston (talk) 02:18, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Thank you, Barry. I know there was a time, now seems long ago, when I was whining about not knowing how to create a composer page. But evidently I found the referenced skeleton, as the John Hetland page seems to follow it closely. Is there a problem with it? John Hetland (talk) 03:12, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

After I wrote the above maybe I have grasped what this is about. I should add -- and here I quoted the string that you gave me, to disastrous results, as it was interpreted right here. I think I should add subst:new composer in double curly braces somewhere. I'll try to figure out where. John Hetland (talk) 03:31, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Oh, I think you're telling me how to create the page, or how I could have created the page. Is there something I need to do now? John Hetland (talk) 03:31, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

No, nothing you need to do. I will go ahead and delete this page. If you ever need to create a composer page again, just create a blank page (one way to do that is simply enter the composer's name in the search box in the left panel), and add {{subst:new composer}}. By the way, same procedure for "new lyricist", "text page", or "new publication". — Barry Johnston (talk) 04:28, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

I'm confused. Why are we even talking about a "Composer: John Hetland" page? There isn't a "Composer: William Byrd" page or a "Composer: Thomas Morley" page. Why should there be a "Composer: John Hetland" page? I thought a Composer Page was what you get when you click on the composer's name on the Composer Pages -- a page that has a brief bio followed by a clickable list of their compositions. Yes? John Hetland (talk) 14:49, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

You're right! The page Composer: John Hetland is not correct. But it was created by YOU on 26 January 2021 (click on "History" tab at Composer: John Hetland to see). I noticed this page looked odd, so I wanted to delete it, but decided to ask you first. When I saw that you had asked a question on that page, I tried to answer it. — Barry Johnston (talk) 15:14, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
