Biography

William Silsbee Fenollosa was born in Salem, Massachusetts. He was the son of Spanish musician Manuel Francisco Ciriaco Fenollosa del Pino who came to the U.S. in 1833 and formed a band and a music school in Salem, Massachusetts. He learned from his father and trained at Harvard University. He was active as an accompanist and was appointed an Instructor of Music at Harvard. He was also named a member of the Harvard Musical Association. His brother Ernest Francisco Fenollosa (1853–1908) was a Japanese art historian and professor of philosophy and political economy at Tokyo Imperial University.
