Biography
Emilie Frances Bauer was born in Walla Walla, Washington, daughter of Jewish immigrants from Alsace. She first studied music with her father, then with Miguel Espinosa in San Francisco, and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris. She taught piano in Walla Walla and Portland, Oregon, and became a music teacher in Boston, Massachusetts. She was music critic for the Portland Oregonian, editor for the Musical Courier, editor for The Musical Leader, an editor for The Etude, critic for the New York Evening Mail, and contributor to the San Francisco Chronicle, Portland Oregonian, and the Concertgoer. She was the older sister and first piano teacher of composer Marion Bauer, who would become the first American student of Nadia Boulanger. She often composed under the pseudonym “Francisco di Nogero”, which is a play on her middle name (Frances) and “Nogero” which is Oregon backwards. She died in New York City.
