Biography

Ernest R. Newton was born in Llandudno, Wales, son of Rev. T. Newton, Vicar of Barnstaple. He was educated at Friars’ School; Monmouth Grammar School; St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge; the Royal Academy of Music; and the Guildhall School of Music in London. He was organist at St. Thomas, Bloomsbury Square. He composed many popular ballad-type songs and duets, and was a prolific arranger of folk and popular songs. He also wrote for organ, piano and some instrumental works including music for band. He also authored the books How to Compose a Song and The Choir-Boy’s Guide to the Cathedral Psalter.
