Italian text Fra piu bei fiori che mai creass'il cielo Havea teso madonn'un laccio d'oro E coperto il tenea di varie frondi Ond'io ch'agliocchi havea d'amor'il velo Corsi per corre'l fior ch'io sol honoro E stendendo la man non viddi d'onde Cosi mi cinse'al coll'un forte laccio Ch'a rimembrar l'ogn'hor trem'et agghiaccio.

English text Among the most beautiful flowers that heaven ever created, My lady had stretched a golden snare, And covered it with various leaves, So I, who had the veil of love on my eyes, Ran to chase the flower that I alone honor, And reaching out my hand, I didn't see from where I was thus bound around the neck by a strong noose, That at the memory of it, I tremble and shiver every hour.
