Biography

(summary) Geoffrey Turton Shaw was born at Clapham, South London, the son of Hampstead organist James Fallas Shaw. He became a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral and attended Derby School. He was educated at Caius College, Cambridge, studying with Sir Charles Villiers Stanford and Charles Wood. He was a music master and Director of Music at Gresham’s School, Holt, and became inspector of music in London schools and Inspector of Music to the Board of Education. He was also organist of St Mary’s, Primrose Hill. The Archbishop of Canterbury awarded him the honorary Lambeth degree of Doctor of Music. His compositions include choral works, anthems, hymn tunes and arrangements, a ballet, chamber pieces, orchestral works, songs, and part-songs. His son Sebastian Lewis Shaw (1905–1994) was a Shakespearean actor best known in the role of Anakin Skywalker in the 1984 Star Wars film Return of the Jedi.
