Biography

James Monroe Hagan was born in Monroe County, Kentucky. He was first educated in Tompkinsville and then received musical training at Bowling Green Normal School; Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Illinois; and the Cincinnati College of Music. He taught high school in Warren, Monroe, Metcalfe, Hart, and Daviess Counties, Kentucky. He taught in Monroe Normal School at Flippin, Kentucky for forty years also serving as head or joint head of the school for many years. He was active in n the Bowling Green and Owensboro First Baptist Churches for years and in the Seven Hills Church where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir director. He also traveled with a male quartet. He published over 800 hymns and edited two public school song books. He died in Owensboro, Kentucky.
