Italian text Non è ch'il duol mi scem’ o il fuoc’ allenti Si m’ard’ il fuoc’ ogn’ or e il duol mi preme, Nè che m’aiti chiam’ altro che morte; Ma mentr’ io lasso e di più viver sazio, Scorgo due si begli occhi ch’a un momento Sent’ il fuoco cangiars’ in duro ghiaccio E di dolcezza il duol farsi diletto Io provo con effeto Che sol un vostro sguardo un cor già spento Vivo e beato può far e felice. Cosi siete di me vera beatrice.

German translation Der Schmerz blendet mich nicht und das Feuer löst mich nicht auf, Aber das Feuer brennt immerfort und der Schmerz bedrückt mich, Und ich rufe niemand anderen als den Tod, daß er mir helfe; Aber während ich erschöpft und des Lebens satt bin, Erblicke ich zwei so schöne Augen, daß ich für einen Augenblick Das Feuer in hartem Eise schillern spüre Und sich der Schmerz durch die Süße in Vergnügen wandelt, Und ich erfahre sehr deutlich, Daß eine einziger Blick von Euch ein bereits ermattetes Herz Lebendig, selig und glücklich machen kann.
