Biography
Orlando Smith Grinnell was born in Bangor, New York. He studied at Wheaton College in Illinois and became a minister. He served in pastorates in Ionia, Iowa; Pittsford, Michigan; Warrensburg, Illinois; and Wayne, Illinois. He was best known as a preacher but wrote a number of hymns and songs. His best-known hymn is “The Little Home Church by the Wayside,” written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Wayne Congregational Church. Another of his popular compositions was “The Battle Cry of Liberty.” Many of his works were published by fellow composer Alfred Beirly. He and his wife were a popular duet singing gospel songs at churches and conferences. He died in Wayne, Illinois.
