Biography

Percy Godfrey was born in Croxall, Derbyshire. England. He was initially encouraged in music by Sir George A. Macfarren and Berthold Tours. He studied privately under Ebenezer Prout and trained at the University of Durham. He was a schoolmaster in Bengeo, Hertford, and then became music-master of King Edward’s School, Canterbury. He was organist of King’s School Chapel and conductor of the East Kent Orchestra. His compositions include a symphony; a symphonic poem (or “symphonic ballad”); a quintet; a Coronation March; an overture; a suite; a two movement “suite” for two violas, cello and piano; organ pieces and part-songs.
