Background
Richard Apperley has held the post of Assistant Organist at Lincoln Cathedral since September 2005, after 6 months as Assistant Organist at St Michael’s Church, Highgate, London. Prior to that he was Sub Organist at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, New Zealand. He has participated in master classes held by Dame Gillian Weir, Hans Uwe Hielscher and David Briggs and has had the privilege of performing with many leading New Zealand groups including the combined bands of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the Wellington Youth Orchestra.
Between January and September of 2002, Richard was Acting Assistant Organist at Wellington Cathedral. During this time he played for important services such as the visit of Her Majesty the Queen. On the Cathedral Choir's tour to the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2002 he was fortunate to play the organs for both services and concerts at prestigious venues such as Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, Lichfield Cathedral and St Paul's Cathedral, London.
Richard is a keen promoter of New Zealand organ music - he has compiled and edited two volumes of New Zealand organ works, published by Fagus Music (UK). He has also given many recitals of the repertoire, and has recorded a concert for broadcast by Concert FM, New Zealand’s premier classical music station.
As well as sharing the conducting and accompaniment of the daily services held in Lincoln Cathedral, Richard also co-directs ‘Ready Steady Choir!’, a Saturday morning choir for local school children, and is the Founding Director of the Cathedral Chamber Choir, a high quality amateur choir of singers aged between the mid-teens and the mid-thirties.
