1. O Täler weit, o Höhen, o schöner grüner Wald,
du meiner Lust und Wehen andächtger Aufenthalt!
Da draussen, stets betrogen, saust die geschäftge Welt,
schlag noch einmal die Bogen um mich, du grünes Zelt.

2. Wenn es beginnt zu tagen, die Erde dampft und blinkt,
die Vögel lustig schlagen, dass dir dein Herz erklingt:
da mag vorgehn, verwehen das trübe Erdenleid,
da sollst du auferstehen in junger Herrlichkeit!

3. Im Walde steht geschrieben ein stilles ernstes Wort
vom rechten Thun und Lieben und was des Menschen Hort.
Ich habe treu gelesen die Worte schlicht und Wahr,
und durch mein ganzes Wesen ward's unaussprechlich klar.

4. Bald werd'ich dich verlassen, fremd in die Fremde gehn,
auf bunt bewegten Gassen des Lebens Schauspiel stehn.
Und mitten in dem Leben wird deines Ernst's Gewalt,
mich Einsamen erheben, so wird mein Herz nicht alt.

Afscheid van het woud
1. O lommerrijke zomen, o dierbaar stukje grond,
waar mijn verdriet kon wonen, mijn vreugd’ een echo vond.
Hierbuiten, geen erbarmen, raast zich de wereld voort.
Wil mij voor ’t laatst omarmen, o groen en zuiver oord.

3. Het woud vertelt verhalen, in woorden klaar en rein,
van ’s mensen idealen, hoe ’t leven dient te zijn.
Ik zal de woorden achten van deze wijze wet
en altijd trouw betrachten wat is uiteengezet.

4. Nu moet ik je verlaten, als een ontheemde gaan.
Door bontbevolkte straten verloopt mijn levensbaan.
Maar zo ik dreig te zwichten, dan zal jouw grootse pracht
mijn eenzaamheid verlichten, zo houdt mijn hart zijn kracht.
 

English translation

Farewell to the forest
1. O valleys wide, o heights, o beautiful green forest
thou attentive dwelling place of my joys and sorrows!
Outside, forever deceived, rages the busy world.
Embrace me for the last time with thy green ceiling.

3. In the forest is encarved in silent, solemn words
about acting and loving justly and what is right for man.
I have faithfully read these simple and truthful words
and through my full being it became unspeakably clear.

4. Soon, I will leave thee and become a stranger abroad,
standing on colourful alleys of Life's stage play.
In the midst of life, the force of thy sincerity
will lift up lonesome me, thus keeping my heart from ageing.

Adieu, belle forêt
1. Tu restes si sereine, si belle ô ma forêt.
Qu'en toi j'oublie mes peines, en toi mon cœur renaît;
Autour de toi s'affaire le monde nuit et jour;
Tu gardes ton mystère, riant et pur séjour:

2. Quand l'aube lumineuse éveille les oiseaux,
leur chanson si joyeuse fait rire les échos.
C'est alors que se calment tout mal toute douleur,
Et l'homme sent son âme s'ouvrir à ta splendeur.

3. Ô forêt tu m'apportes le secret du bonheur,
Les mots qui réconfortent, le repos, la fraîcheur;
Tu me fais reconnaître qu'aimer c'est mon devoir;
Tu laves tout mon être : en moi se lit l'espoir.

4. Vers les rues et les villes bientôt je partirai;
Quittant ton bel asile, tes chants ô ma forêt;
Mais ton image claire en moi demeurera;
