Biography
Edwin Matthew Lott was born in St. Helier, Jersey, England. Showing talent at a child, he was organist at St. Matthew’s Church at age 10 followed by other positions in the area. He became professor of music at Victoria College, Jersey, and was bandmaster to three English regiments. He was then organist at St. Peter’s, Bayswater, London; St. Ethelbourga’s, Bishopsgate; and St. Sepulchre, Holborn. He was professor of music at Trinity College of Music and, in 1891, was appointed professor of music at the University of Toronto, Canada. He died in Kensington, London, England. He authored a number of music books and composed works for organ and piano, cantatas, services, anthems, songs, and a few partsongs.
