Biography
George R. Sturgis was born in Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada. His family emigrated to Michigan and he grew up near Peck, Michigan. He graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music and became a music teacher. He taught voice, violin and piano, and operated a singing school for many years in Lexington, Michigan. He retired to his previous home at Peck, where he died. He wrote a number of hymns and songs for pedagogical use and compiled a volume of music for singing schools that was published by R. H. Meredith of Chicago.
