Biography
Jacob Henry Hall was born near Harrisonburg, Virginia, and attended singing schools as a child. He earned money by trapping quail and bought a German accordion, teaching himself to play one part while singing another. After he and an older brother jointly purchased an organ, he taught himself to play hymn tunes, Gospel songs, and anthems. He went on to study music theory, harmony, and composition in Harrisonburg and elsewhere. He also attended a Normal Music School in New Market, Virginia, Dana’s Musical Institute in Warren, Ohio, a normal school run by George F. & F. W. Root at Silver Lake, New York, H. R. Palmer’s School of Music at Chautauqua, New York, the Philadelphia Summer School of Music, and the National College of Music in Chicago, Illinois. He helped conduct singing schools and conventions and later served as principal of the National Normal School of Music. He wrote, compiled and contributed to many volumes of music for Sunday schools, conferences, revivals, singing schools, etc. He also wrote Biography of Gospel Song and Hymn Writers (1914). He died in Dayton, Virginia.
