Biography

James Hott Ruebush was born in Singer’s Glenn, Virginia, son of music publisher and teacher Ephraim Ruebush. His grandfather was composer and teacher Joseph Funk. He trained at the Grand Conservatory of Music in New York and studied with many of the famous teachers of the time including Horatio Richmond Palmer and Frederic Woodman Root. He taught music at Shenandoah University, Virginia, and became general manager of the institution. He held many singing schools and conventions throughout the region and was the editor of many well-known collections of songs and manuals of music instruction—many of them publications by the family firm Ruebush-Kieffer Co. He died in Dayton, Virginia.
