General Information
Title: O vos omnes par trop aventureux
Composer: Isaac Lhéritier
Lyricist:
Number of voices: 4vv Voicing: SATB
Genre: Secular, Chanson
Language: French
Instruments: A cappella
First published: 1543 in Le Parangon des chansons, livre 10 (Jacques Moderne), no. 5
Description: A curiosity by this unknown composer: a brief song with a macaronic verse text, constantly switching between Latin (the opening of the Passiontide responsory O vos omnes) and interpolations in French of a suggestive nature. Despite the lack of punctuation, the way that the text runs implies that the punctuation of the Latin should be radically altered, with the insertion of a full stop, or at least a colon, between ‘videte’ and ‘si est dolor’. The vaguely formulated advice seems to end on a note of caution. Published by Jacques Moderne, Lyon, 1543
