Description: A folk hymn, related to a number of eighteenth-century songs. First published in Ingalls' Christian Harmony, 1805, without attribution, for three parts, in A minor. The versions fall into three general classes:
- Following Ingalls
- Following the Missouri Harmony 1820 version of Pilgrim
- Following Lowry's 1820 version of The Traveler.
It is uncertain whether versions are dependent on one another, or whether they independently arranged an unpublished manuscript or oral source. Words by an anonymous author (Music 2005); the earliest reference I could find was in Smith and Sleep's Divine Hymns, 1794.
