Near an ancient hostelrie,
Lived a maiden fair to see,
Oh! she sang bewitchingly
Trilla, lilla, lee.

Courtly knights and nobles gay
Heard her sing her pretty lay,
Flattering, foolish words would say,
Gaily laughed she.

Came one day a squire fair,
Handsome, honest, debonair,
He would wed this songstress rare,
Much in love was he.

But, she aimed at higher game,
Hearts of nobles sought to tame;
Scoffed and mocked when-e’er he came,
And answered saucily.

So he left her for her pride,
No lord sought her for his bride,
And a maid she lived and died,
Near the “Fleur de Lys.”
