No more, alas! shall we behold him,
Nor hear his accents as of yore,
Our arms again, again may ne’er enfold him,
Our hands may clasp his hand no more!

Ah! sad indeed is retrospection!
While Memory’s eyes his virtues scan,
We see too late his true perfection,
We can but weep, Oh! poor old man!
