1. Bei stiller Nacht, zur ersten Wacht / Ein Stimm begann zu klagen.
Ich nahm in acht, was sie da sagt / Voll Angst und voll Verzagen.
2. Es war der liebe Gottessohn. / Sein Haupt hat er in Armen.
Viel weiß und bleicher als der Mond. / Ein Stein es möcht' erbarmen.
3. Ach Vater mein, Und kann's nit sein? / Und muss ich's je dann wagen?
Will trinken rein den Kelch allein. Kann dir's ja nit versagen.
4. Doch Sinn und Mut erschrecken tut, / Soll ich mein Leben lassen?
O bitt'rer Tod! Mein Angst und Not / Ist über alle Maßen.
5. Der schöne Mond will untergehn, / Für Leid nit mehr mag scheinen.
