Verde lauro è‘l mio core,
Che vive di speranza:
Il suo tronco è la fede, e la costanza;
È la radice amore
I vari rami sono i miei desiri,
Dove i pensier fan nido; e strane cure
Son le foglie, e paure,
Che l’aura tremolar fan de i sospiri;
l’ombra di questo ALLORO
È la mia vita, e’l mio dolce ristoro.

Der grüne Lorbeer ist mein Herz,
der von der Hoffnung lebt:
sein Stamm ist der Glaube, und die Treue;
die Wurzel ist die Liebe,
die Zweige sind meine Wünsche,
wo die Gedanken sich einnisten; und seltsame Sorgen
sind die Blätter, und ängstliche,
die die Luft zittern lassen durch ihre Seufzer;
der Schatten dieses Lorbeerbaums
ist mein Leben, und mein süßer Trost.

The green laurel is my heart,
which lives by hope;
its trunk is the faith, and the fidelity;
the root is love,
its twigs are the wishes,
where the thoughts nest; and strange sorrows
are the leaves, and anxious,
which make the air tremble by their sighs;
the shadow of this laurel tree
is my life, and my sweet solace.
