English text
There’s ice upon the river,
There’s ice upon the rill,
There’s snow down in the valley,
There’s snow upon the hill;
The frost is hanging pendant
From each long and leafless bough,
And every one is heard to say,
“It’s cold as Greenland now!”
The tinkling, joyous sleigh-bells
Are ringing far and near,
And shouts and merry laughter
Are the sounds which reach the ear!
The frost shines in the twilight,
And trembles in the air,
It makes us gray before our time,
In silvering o’er our hair!
The men in shawls and mantles
Go muffled through the streets,
The women (bless their tender souls)
We very seldom meet;
But every thing looks joyous,
Although every thing seems wrong,
And wagon-wheels have learned to sing
A crazy winter song!
