Old French
Amour au cueur me poingt
quant bien aymé je suis,
mais aymer je ne puis
quant on ne m’aime point.

Chascung soit adverty
de faire comme moy
car daymer sans party
cest ung trop grant esmoy.

Modern French
Amour au cœur me pique
quand bien aimé je suis,
mais aimer ne puis
quand on ne m'aime point.

Chacun soit averti
de faire comme moi,
car aimer sans parti (:partenaire)
c'est un trop grand émoi.

English.png English translation

Literal (almost)

Cupid pricks me in the heart when I am beloved,
but I can not love, when no one loves me first.
Everyone be advised to behave like me,
because loving without correspondence is too great a disturbance.

Poetic rendition by Mick Swithinbank

Love blossoms in my heart
only if returned,
but I'd rather not love at all
than to see it spurned.
Quench the flame
before it is ignited!
Better so to do
than to suffer unrequited.

Dutch.png Dutch translation

Liefde brant mijn hert aen alle zyen,
Als Liefd met Liefde wort betaelt:
Maer ick en can gheen Vryster vryen,
Als haer jonste niet te mywaert daelt.

Elck die zijn hert in Liefden dwaelt,
Die zy voordachtich int beginnen,
Soo hem ghelijcke Liefde faelt,
Soo sal hy niet dan druck ghewinnen.

vertaling: Hendrick Spieghel (1549-1612)
