Description: This Compline Hymn setting for the Vigil of Christmas in the Sarum Rite makes use of the Sarum Plainchant also associated with Veni Creator Spiritus. Sheppard sets the second and fourth verses, the odd verses being sung as plainchant.

Salvator mundi Domine,
Qui nos salvasti hodie,
In hac nocte nos protege,
Et salva omni tempore.

Adesto nunc propitius,
Et parce supplicantibus;
Tu dele nostra crimina,
Tu tenebras illumina.

Ne mentem somnus opprimat,
Ne hostis nos surrepiat,
Nec ullis caro, petimus,
Commaculetur sordibus.

Te, reformator sensuum,
Votis precamur cordium,
Ut puri castis mentibus
Surgamus a cubilibus.

Deo Patri sit gloria,
Eiusque soli Filio,
Cum Spiritu Paraclito
Et nunc et in perpetuum.

Who has redeemed us today,
Protect us in this night,
And save us at any time.

Propitiously help us now
And have mercy on us, entreating you,
Erase our crimes,
Lighten our darkness.

That sleep may not oppress our spirits,
That the enemy may not creep upon us,
And that not our flesh, we pray,
Be soiled with any stains.

We ask you, reformer of our senses,
With our heartfelt prayers,
That pure, with chaste minds,
We may rise from our beds.
