English text
I wander by the woody rill,
Where evening shadows play,
And hear the song of the whippoorwill
As he sings his evening lay.
Hark! hark! hear his song,
As it floats along,
Now ’tis grave, now ’tis gay,
As we hear his lay.
Oh, soft he trills his evening lay,
By breezes borne along;
A saddened feeling upon me comes
As I hear his evening song.
It calls to mind the old, old home,
So many miles away;
With long lost friends I have oft-times heard,
As he sang his evening lay.
