Description: Originally for For accompaniment by two violins, trombone, and bassoon (see Eskew and Kroeger 1998). Words adapted from a hymn by Thomas Scott, 1772, Angel! roll the rock away. Holyoke set four stanzas of Scott's hymn.

English text Holyoke 1791 Angels, roll the rock away, Den of death, resign thy prey. See, the Savior quits the tomb, Glowing with immortal bloom. Shout, shout ye seraphs, Gabriel, raise Fame's eternal trump of praise. Let the earth's remotest bound Echo to the blissful sound. Saints of God, lift up your eyes, See the Conqueror scale the skies. Troops of angels on the road, Hail and sing the incarnate God. Heaven unfolds its portals wide, Matchless hero, through them ride. King of glory, mount thy throne, Boundless empire is thine own. Hallelujah, Amen.
