Hor che ritorna il sol co suoi bei rai
A rallegrar la terra
E rivestirl la del suo ricco manto,
Chi a pietà, mio sol, sì il cor ti serra
Che da me lunge stai
E lasci consumar mi in doglia e’in pianti?
Lassa, non vedi quanto
D’ornament'or m'è tolto,
Che m'è contesa l'aria del tuo volto
E de begl'occhi il lume,
Ch'a me fuor di costume
Può far con gioia e meraviglia altiera
Di doppo verno doppia primavera?

German translation

Nun, da die Sonne zurückkehrt mit ihren schönen Strahlen,
um die Erde wieder zu erfreuen
und sie wieder zu bekleiden mit ihrem üppigen Gewand,
wer verschließt da, meine Sonne, dein Herz so vor dem Mitleid,
dass du fern von mir weilst
und mich in Gram und Klagen verzehren lässt?
Ich Unglückliche, siehst du nicht, wieviel
Reichtum mir entzogen wird,
da mir vorenthalten wird der Anblick deines Gesichts
und das Licht deiner schönen Augen,
das mir ganz ungewöhnlich
mit Freude und edlem Staunen
aus doppeltem Winter doppelten Frühling machen kann?

English translation

Now that the sun returns with his beautiful rays
to rejoice the earth again
and to cloth it by his opulent garment,
who now, my sun, locks the heart within you,
that you stay far away from me
and leave me consuming myself in pain and grief?
Miserable me, don’t you see, of how much
richness I am deprived,
if the sight of your face is withheld from me
and the light of your beautiful eyes,
which, quite unusually,
can make, by joy and high amazement,
double spring out of double winter.
