German text
Nun sich der Tag geendet hat
und keine Sonn' mehr scheint,
schläft alles, was sich abgematt'
und was zuvor geweint.
Nur du, mein Gott, hast keine Rast,
du schläfst noch schlummerst nicht;
die Finsternis ist dir verhaßt,
weil du bist selbst das Licht.
Gedenke, Herr, doch auch an mich
in dieser schwarzen Nacht,
und schenke du mir gnädiglich
den Schutz von deiner Wacht.
Drauf tu' ich mein' Augen zu
und schlafe fröhlich ein,
mein Gott wacht jetzt in meiner Ruh;
wer wollt noch traurig sein.
