General Information

Title: O Israel, trust in the Lord
Composer: William Croft
Lyricist: Psalm 130, vv. 7,8create page

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SATB
Genre: SacredAnthem

Language: English
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1780
Description: Edition prepared from "Harmonia coelestis or The Harmony of Heaven imitated" (anthology, London, pub. 1780). This version is considerably simplified from its initial appearance in Croft's Harmonia sacra, in order to prove useful in country parishes. The arranger (probably the publisher) has detached the final chorus from Croft's extended verse anthem ("Out of the deep"), doubled the note values, ironed out rhythms and harmonies, and attached an Hallelujah of unidentified provenance. This piece therefore does not represent Croft's work for Westminster Abbey in his full pomp, but rather the style in which his work was disseminated through the provinces in later Georgian England.
