Forum - BB

Hi Chuck,

Just to remind you that the help files in various languages still contain links to the (obsolete?) forum. Though I wonder whether someone needing help in posting scores will be confident enough to tackle the wonderful world of wiki in the BB, it might still prove useful to update the relevant links in the help files, don't you think? Cordially, joachim 23:32, 1 April 2008 (PDT) P.S.: Had time to think about that templates list yet? :))

Categories

Hi Chuck,

Like I said before, the latest series of cats, including works by composer, seem like a huge improvement to what CPDL is all about. Still, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with what's being introduced, since I'm not a very experienced wiki-user (nor planning to become one anytime soon). I'm currently unable to update/conform pages to a sufficient degree, simply because I'm unaware of the number/kinds of templates available (I've worked out Lang and a cappella, but I'm still at odds with the accompaniment cats, to name but one kind). The question I've asked before is undoubtedly naive, but I'd still like to know if some kind of (comprehensive) overview is available on the cats that are 'required' on a score or composer page, if I am to continue my modest contributions here. If it isn't, I'm afraid this'll be it for me, since having contributions expanded and corrected by others anyway is not my idea of progress. Cordially, joachim 01:54, 7 April 2008 (PDT)

I second joachim's request, a comprehensive guide of dos and dont's for score and composer pages would greatly help us newbies. -- Carlos 02:03, 7 April 2008 (PDT)
Sorry to intrude on your page, Chuck - just to briefly say that I will be away for a few days (see my talk page) but when I get back, I will make creating or helping to create some help pages on this subject a priority. If someone else starts before then - great! I'll try to improve what they've done, otherwise, I'll begin the process when I return. --Bobnotts talk 03:37, 7 April 2008 (PDT)

can't seem to open contributed score

hi chuck,

I recently contributed my 'Adoramus Te' to cpdl, but I can't open it via the site. I think something went wrong with the publication on cpdl. Can you give me any advice? since you did some editing on the adoramus te site.

Thanks, W. Stuurman

Hi Wietse. I found the problem: the title of the PDF file in the links appears as "Adoramus_Te.pdf", but the actual title of the uploaded file is "Adoramus_te.pdf". I'll make the changes right now. I just looked at the score - very nice (I'd like to use it with my choir). On another point, when one posts a message such as the one above, the easiest way to sign it is to type 4 tildes (~~~~), which makes it much easier for users to reply, since it inserts the link to the user's 'signature' (which can be customized in the user's 'preferences' link at the top of the page). -- Chucktalk Giffen 23:06, 10 April 2008 (PDT)

Suggestion for LinkText template

Hi Chuck, I was doing a test with LinkText and had an idea to use it to create a category that would gather all settings that use a particular text page. The translations could then be on that same category page, and we would not have the double work of adding LinkText to a score page and editing the text page to point to that score. Take a look at this example and say what you think: Category:Mirabile mysterium. Regards -- CarlosTalk 03:38, 11 April 2008 (PDT)

Good idea (which I have toyed with previously, but only in my mind). Take a look at Template:LnkTxt to see what I was thinking of. I think it might be possible to migrate from text pages to text category pages, but I'll explain that later. -- Chucktalk Giffen 06:53, 11 April 2008 (PDT)
Hi Chuck, I liked the way you extended the template functionality adding a third parameter, besides simplifying the category name (much better now). I noticed that all other category links on a score page appear in normal text; do you think it would be good to keep this standard instead of using a bold link to the category? (This is very subjective, I know :)
When you decide the template is already ok, I won't mind implementing it manually, if there's no other means. I'd just have to move each Text page to Category:Text page, change each score page to use the template, and them removing their links from the text page, right? -- CarlosTalk 10:52, 11 April 2008 (PDT)
Hi again Carlos. I think the template is okay, and even if I change it the wording or appearance (but not the parameters), the changes will show up automatically on pages that use it. I would say that we can go ahead with Mirabile mysterium and O salutaris hostia as test cases, but I would like to be able to run the idea past the other admins here before we start making wholesale changes. As for migration, I think we can copy the entire text of a Text page over to the corresponding Category-text page, replacing the Text page with a redirect to the Category-text page, and then remove the listed links to each individual score page when the corresponding LinkText has been replaced by a LnkTxt. So, except for the two experimental Category-text pages, we'll wait for feedback ... I'll post a note on the Bulletin board as soon as I can. -- Chucktalk Giffen 04:00, 12 April 2008 (PDT)
Chuck, I understand the other admins also have the right to give their opinions on the subject; nothing needs to be done in a hurry, let's then wait for their feedback. As for the appearance, I changed my mind after seeing the text on Mirabile mysterium (Adrian Willaert): I think I'd prefer "Original text and translations may be found at Mirabile mysterium." (Without the initial bold. Again, only my opinion :) Thanks! -- CarlosTalk 04:52, 12 April 2008 (PDT)

Hello and welcome to CPDL. I assume this is the Login ID of Adrian Cuello. We are delighted that you have begun posting some of your choral works here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page, and I will try and help. There are a few points that need to be clarified and straightened out, though.

  • You should have only one Composer name. At present there are the several names under which you have posted scores. You should pick one of these and stick with it (I would recommend either 1 or 2), and the other names can be moved to the one you select:
1. Adrián A. Cuello Piraquibis
2. Adrián Cuello
3. Adrian Cuello

HI CHUCK, THANK A LOT FOR HELP TO MY WEB IN "CPDL" IS SO BEATIFULL, REALLY i APRECIAT IT, (SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH) FOR THE NAME I RATHER CHOOSE "Adrian Cuello"

  • You list the language of some works as "other" and then refer to them as in the "Gallego idiom" (I think we would say "Gallego dialect"). Is this a dialect of Spanish? is it Aragonian? is it a separate language? (Pardon my ignorance, but we want to have the language specified correctly, and if it is a language not yet represented at CPDL, we will create the appropriate categories).

Yess, that is Gallego dialect, in theory, yes is a spanish dialect, but you must to have carefull for tell it, I rather Gallego dialect, and Aragonian is and old dialect, when the spanish don´t be spanish, now it only have spoken in the Aragon Montains

  • Please be careful when specifying score page titles and other important information. This isn't disastrous because corrections can (and will) be made by others (most often administrators such as myself who try to keep CPDL accurate and up-to-date) - but it would lessen our workload.

Ok, I will be carefull for next time, thank a lot again, a big, big Hug!!!

Again, thank you for you interesting scores! -- Chucktalk Giffen♫ 23:37, 13 April 2008 (PDT)

Template:LnkLatTxt

Hi Chuck. I've just seen your new Template:LnkLatTxt which I reckon is a bit of an overkill. We don't really need the Latin titles italicized do we? It's not a convention I've ever come across. Shouldn't we just keep it simple and have one template for link text? The rest of your work on Template:LnkTxt looks great and I look forward to it being realised and helping with the migration. --Bobnotts talk 19:33, 18 April 2008 (PDT

Hi Rob. I just wrote a long reply to this message which got axed, with an error message, and the original text was lost. However, I do recall the last thing I wrote was that I'm sitting here looking at the BCP at Psalm 31 In te, Domine, speravi (note the italics). I said something about the LnkLatTxt being a matter of taste and past experience (or conditioning?) that Latin text looks best when it is presented in italics, etc., etc., etc. (right now I'm ticked off with Windows or the server for losing my orignial reply). -- Chucktalk Giffen 21:56, 18 April 2008 (PDT)
Hi Chuck, I tend to agree with Bob on this matter, I'm an adept of the KISS principle and think that having just one template makes maintenance easier. As you must have noticed, I've been using only LnkTxt, with the 4th parameter for italics when necessary. I noticed though, that from the 102 text pages we have at the moment (not counting the Psalms), 83 (82%) are Latin texts. So wouldn't it be more logic to make italics the default for this template? I made some tests in my user page and liked the results: We would be able to use, for example, {{LnkTxt|Vexilla Regis|Bruckner}} or {{LnkTxt|Vexilla Regis|Bruckner|4=''}} to render the same italics effect (backwards compatible! :), and {{LnkTxt|The Messiah|Handel|4=}} or {{LnkTxt|4=|The Messiah|Handel}} for non-italics text. What do you both think? -- CarlosTalk 06:47, 2 May 2008 (PDT)
Hi Carlos, I'm inclined to agree with you, that the default case should be in italics. On the other hand, I don't see us abandoning Template:MassText and am planning to implement a corresponding PsalmText template. I just won't get to it until later though. And, without objections, I'll change Template:LnkTxt as you suggest as soon as I can. Thanks!! -- Chucktalk Giffen 08:25, 2 May 2008 (PDT)
I agree that the default should be italics. Thanks for suggesting that, Carlos. I have to say I can get a bit phased by the template techo wizardry you guys perform though I can usually understand it enough to get by! Chuck: what would a PsalmText template include in addition to the existing Template:LnkTxt? By the way, take a look at the great progress Arie has made with a new add works form here. There will need to be some further modifications to the script for all these new/altered templates! --Bobnotts talk 08:35, 2 May 2008 (PDT)
Hi Rob. I had in mind being able to type something like {{PsTxt|68|1-10,33-36|<sort key>}} to produce something like: For text and translations, see Psalm 68:1-10,33-36. ... The inclusion of verses would be optional, of course. (Note that I chose the RCL Psalm and verses for tomorrow.) ... I'm also having second thoughts about whether to make the Psalm text pages into text categories since (a) so many different translations exist (even in a fixed language), and currently there is a tendency to include (parenthetically) the language (and sometimes particular translation) used for a given composer's setting on the Psalm text pages. The same applies to a few other immensely popular and/or varied texts, such as Ave Maria and Pater noster (which has to contend with several competing versions/languages). -- Chucktalk Giffen 23:19, 2 May 2008 (PDT)

Default sortkey

Hi Chuck, you're having quite a lot of work re-editing those templates to add the sort key. It would be really nice if we had the {{DEFAULTSORT}} magic word already available in this version of the wiki platform. With just one command all the page templates would have their sorting order reconfigured. Is there any possibility of a platform upgrade being done in near future? -- CarlosTalk 06:28, 19 May 2008 (PDT)

Good luck with convincing Raf to do that, Carlos :-\ I'm going to be spamming him with emails beginning in the not too distant future. However, I actually came to your talk page, Chuck, to report what seems to be a bit of a mistake in the accompaniment templates code... Template:StrAcc for instance seems to have lost the ability to have the sort key as an optional part (see 1, 2, 3 for examples). I hope it won't take too long to fix! --Bobnotts talk 07:03, 19 May 2008 (PDT)
Never mind, Chuck, it was just one of those missing pairs of curly brackets; you added them to the other templates and forgot this. Already fixed. Checked all the other Accompaniment templates and they seem to be ok.
Rob, too bad the big boss is not planning to do these upgrades... but who knows, perhaps your spamming will convince him :) Good luck! -- CarlosTalk 13:21, 19 May 2008 (PDT)
Sorry about not catching one of those missing extra pairs of curly brackets. And, yes, I, too, lamented the fact that our wiki version does not support DEFAULTSORT (as you can well imagine!). -- Chucktalk Giffen 23:39, 19 May 2008 (PDT)

File conversion needed - can you assist

Hi Chuck, I've come across a file in Finale 2007 format (which I can't read - and consequently can't process into MIDI and PDF file required to post.

http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/a/a7/Binchois-Virgo_Rosa.mus - 41KB

Can you convert it to Finale 2006 and repost - or process the PDF and MIDI files to complete the posting set of PDF, MIDI, and Finale files ? Johnhenryfowler 04:33, 28 June 2008 (PDT)

Hi John. It can't be converted backwards to Finale 2006, but I'll make PDF and MIDI files using Finale 2007. -- Chucktalk Giffen 04:36, 28 June 2008 (PDT)

File generation help

Hi Chuck, I've come accross another Finale 2007 file. Can you post MIDI and PDF files ? Thanks! And thank-you for the recognition of the hours of work this posting project has taken. 12 Scores left to post !!! Johnhenryfowler 10:23, 30 June 2008 (PDT)

Hi John. Just give me the links to the scores you need PDFs and MIDIs for, and I'll get to them, hopefully this afternoon. And, your're welcome! I've made a very modest start in recognizing significant work of individuals, and you, Rob, and Dave Fraser are the first recipients ... all very much deserved. I guess it's intended as the ChoralWiki counterpart to the Wikipedia Barnstar awards. -- Chucktalk Giffen 22:03, 30 June 2008 (PDT)
