Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 98)

Latin.png Latin text

1  Psalmus ipsi David. Dominus regnavit: irascantur populi;
qui sedet super cherubim: moveatur terra.
2  Dominus in Sion magnus, et excelsus super omnes populos.
3  Confiteantur nomini tuo magno, quoniam terribile et sanctum est,
4  et honor regis judicium diligit. Tu parasti directiones;
judicium et justitiam in Jacob tu fecisti.
5  Exaltate Dominum Deum nostrum, et adorate scabellum pedum ejus, quoniam sanctum est.
6  Moyses et Aaron in sacerdotibus ejus, et Samuel inter eos qui invocant nomen ejus:
invocabant Dominum, et ipse exaudiebat eos;
7  in columna nubis loquebatur ad eos. Custodiebant testimonia ejus,
et praeceptum quod dedit illis.
8  Domine Deus noster, tu exaudiebas eos; Deus, tu propitius fuisti eis, et ulciscens in omnes
adinventiones eorum.
9  Exaltate Dominum Deum nostrum, et adorate in monte sancto ejus,
quoniam sanctus Dominus Deus noster.

Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer

English.png English text

1  A psalm for David himself. The Lord is King, be the people never so unpatient:
he sitteth between the cherubims, be the earth never so unquiet.
2  The Lord is great in Sion: and high above all people.
3  They shall give thanks unto thy Name: which is great, wonderful, and holy.
4  The King's power loveth judgement; thou hast prepared equity:
thou hast executed judgement and righteousness in Jacob.
5  O magnify the Lord our God: and fall down before his footstool, for he is holy.
6  Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among such as call upon his Name:
these called upon the Lord, and he heard them.
7  He spake unto them out of the cloudy pillar: for they kept his testimonies,
and the law that he gave them.
8  Thou heardest them, O Lord our God: thou forgavest them, O God, and punishedst
their own inventions.
9  O magnify the Lord our God, and worship him upon his holy hill:
for the Lord our God is holy.

Káldi fordítás (98. zsoltár)

Paraphrases by Isaac Watts, 1717-1719

English.png English text

1. Jehovah reigns, let therefore all
The guilty Nations quake;
On cherub's wings he sits enthroned;
Let earth's foundations shake.

2. On Zion's hill he keeps his court,
His palace makes her towers;
Yet thence his sovereignty extends
Supreme o'er earthly powers.

3. Let therefore all with praise address
His great and dreadful name;
And, with his unresisted might,
His holiness proclaim.

4. For truth and justice in his reign,
of strength and power take place;
His judgments are with righteousness
Dispensed to Jacob's race.

5. Therefore exalt the Lord our God,
Before his footstool fall;
And with his unresisted might,
his holiness extol.

6 Moses and Aaron thus of old
Among his priests adored;
Amongst his prophets Samuel thus
His sacred name implored.

7. Distressed, upon the Lord they cried,
Who ne'er their suit denied;
But, as with reverence they implored
He graciously replied.

8. For, with their camp,to guide their march
The cloudy pillar moved:
They kept his laws, and to his will
Obedient servants proved.

9. He answered them, forgiving oft
His people for their sake.
And those who rashly them opposed,
Did sad examples make.

10. With worship at his sacred courts
Exalt our God and Lord;
For he, who only holy is,
alone should be adored.

1. Jehovah reigns, let all
The guilty nations quake,
On cherub's wings he sits,
Let earth's foundations shake:
In Zion he is great,
Above all People high;
O praise his holy name,
Who dwells above the sky,
In awful majesty.

2. For truth and justice still,
Of strength and power take place;
His righteous judgments are
Dispensed to Jacob's race:
Therefore exalt the Lord,
Before his footstool fall
In adoration low;
And with his power, let all
His holiness extol.

3. Moses and Aaron thus,
Amongst his priests adored,
Samuel his prophet too,
He heard, when they implored.
Before the camp, their guide
The cloudy pillar moved;
They kept his laws, and they
Obedient servants proved,
His ordinance they loved.

4. He heard, and oft forgave
His people for their sake,
And those who them opposed,
Did sad examples make;
Then, in his sacred courts,
Due praise to him afford,
For he who holy is,
Alone should be adored:
Ye saints, praise ye the Lord.

PART 1 (S. M.)
Christ's kingdom and majesty.

1. The God Jehovah reigns!
Let all the nations fear;
Let sinners tremble at his throne,
And saints be humble there.

2. Jesus the Savior reigns!
Let earth adore its Lord;
Bright cherubs his attendants stand,
Swift to fulfill his word.

3. In Zion is his throne,
His honors are Divine;
His church shall make his wonders known,
For there his glories shine.

4. How holy is his name!
How terrible his praise!
Justice, and truth, and judgment join
In all his works of grace.

PART 2 (S. M.)
A holy God worshiped with reverence.

1. Exalt the Lord our God,
And worship at his feet;
His nature is all holiness,
And mercy is his seat.

2. When Israel was his church,
When Aaron was his priest,
When Moses cried, when Samuel prayed,
He gave his people rest.

3. Oft he forgave their sins,
Nor would destroy their race;
And oft he made his vengeance known,
When they abused his grace.

4. Exalt the Lord our God,
Whose grace is still the same;
Still he's a God of holiness,
And jealous for his name.
